We were celebrating my son Josh’s birthday (late) with my family as well as my brother in law Joe’s birthday (a little more on time…) I volunteered to make dessert and asked my sister what type of cake Joe would like as he’s fairly particular. She said he liked carrot cake and white cake with strawberries… okay done! Continue reading
As with many things, I am quite spur of the moment.. meaning.. I just see something in the store or on TV or whatever and just suddenly think “I HAVE TO MAKE THAT!”
And so it was with the key lime pie… walking through Sobey’s the other day and there they were… KEY LIMES! I don’t remember the last time I saw them in a grocery store here! Very unusual! Continue reading
We were at the Farmer’s Market on the weekend and found some lovely fresh rhubarb…. so of course pie must be made!
My mother is a pie expert. I’ve probably told you this before, but she made pie a LOT … seemed like every day.. after all, Dad needed his breakfast pie.. not to mention lunch and dinner pie… but then he got the high cholesterol and all that pie eating came to an end. Good thing as I think my mother was getting awfully tired ….but I digress. Continue reading
Several people in my family really REALLY like vanilla cake with whipped cream and strawberries.. not SHORTCAKE .. true shortcake is an entirely different thing.. more like a biscuit. I made this one for my niece Madeleine’s birthday this year. I will say this.. I used some brown sugar in it as I was short on white… (half white half brown…) and it did lend a bit of a caramely taste, but it’s prettier if you use all white. Continue reading
This is totally a cheater post… It’s my same cookie recipe, but this time I put in a combination of 90% dark chocolate bar… Marc Thomas bought one at the store and didn’t care for it so I put it to good use… .then some milk chocolate chips and some caramel pieces… about 2 cups of chips/caramel in total… the sweet caramel and milk chocolate balance out the bitterness of the 90% chocolate… Continue reading
When Marc Thomas and I began dating, he spent a bunch of time in Seattle for work. He would bring me back lovely presents… like pickled asparagus from Pike’s Market. We both LOVE pickled asparagus, especially in Caesars.
So it was asparagus season, so we bought a TON on sale at the market to try our hand at pickling. By WE I mean ME. The recipe calls for 30 spears, however, we bought the thin ones, so there were more asparagus spears in each jar. Continue reading
Well hello there Blueberry pie….
We bought a lot of blueberries, so I made some pie….
Blueberry pie has always been one of my favourites since I was a kid. I think because it wasn’t a frequent type of pie that we had… my mother made a lot of apple pies…
Anyway.. made some pie. I had to kind of fool around with this… last time I made a berry pie it was a wee bit runny… my rule of thumb is basically 1 tbsp cornstarch for each cup of berries.. seems to do the trick. It was delicious. Just saying. Continue reading
For those of you who don’t know, there was a point in my life that I refer to as “when I used to be Martha Stewart…”. Meaning, I was a stay at home mom, so I often canned – salsa, pickles, different jams, and a kick ass marmalade. I used to love to can things to give as gifts. I also sewed clothes and costumes for the kids and made the nieces and nephews teddy bears and pajamas at Christmas time. Oh, and Christmas stockings for the whole family.
Eventually, I got over this and haven’t busted the sewing machine out for years. (Oh, I quilted too.) The most “Martha” I get is crafting occasionally (used to be a nearly daily occurrence. I’m in crafting rehab.) Continue reading
This year I asked Josh what he’d like for his birthday dinner. He said he didn’t care as long as I made Sweet Red Pepper soup.
Several years ago the kids and I started doing a Christmas Eve dinner with various friends who for whatever reason either had nothing better to do or didn’t want to see their own families, or couldn’t or whatever. Long story short, Christmas Eve generally ends up with us and close friends drinking wine and playing Win, Lose or Draw and Cards Against Humanity (a newer tradition…) after having a lovely meal. The only OTHER thing Josh asked me to make for his birthday was Firecracker Shrimp BowTies. Years ago, it was my go to on the East Side Mario’s menu. Then, they took it off, replaced the BowTies with Penne and it was never the same.. just didn’t taste as good.
I looked online at one point to find a “copycat” recipe… and they I just made up my own. And Josh and I both LOVE it.. I just love farfalle pasta.. it’s a texture thing… and snow peas and garlic and shrimp … delish!
One part of starting a cooking blog was to share some of my recipes that I kind of just “threw together” so that my kids would have them… so here ya go Joshie! Now you can make it when you’re away at school. 🙂
